Felstone Consulting Limited’s Director, Simon Higson, features in May’s Quarry Management.
Simon has summarised his recent paper to the 2024 Extractive Industries Geology (EIG) conference in Hull. His article reviews a sample of 97 biological Sites of Special Scientific Interest SSSI’s for evidence of mineral extraction and the associated main habitats. Analysis of these sites provides an important resource for professionals engaged in planning new extractive projects and undertaking biodiversity net gain (BNG) calculations of proposed restoration schemes.
Extending over 4,452 ha across 39 counties of England, the main habitats incorporate types of grassland, dwarf shrub heath, woodland, open water, fen, marsh and swamp.
The identified sites, taken from Natural England’s Designated Sites View database, were all designated over a 28-year period, between 1982 and 2010.
A full version of the paper will be published in the EIG 2024 conference proceedings.
